Atlantis Stories: Before the Mast on a Sailing Research Vessel, 1944-1948
by William B. Cooper

Atlantis Stories is the memoir of Bill Cooper, who signed on as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the 143-foot ketch Atlantis during World War II. His story captures the excitement, hardship, humor, and traditions of life at sea aboard one of the world’s largest sailing vessels.

Cooper’s experiences are woven into the history of the era, including D-Day, U-boat actions, the bombing of Hiroshima, and the end of World War II. Along the way, he learns traditional seamanship from seasoned Scandinavian sailors and develops a lifelong passion for wooden boats.

After his time aboard Atlantis, Cooper became a builder and designer of wooden boats and spent much of his life sharing his skills with others in Falmouth and Woods Hole.

A fascinating blend of maritime history, adventure, and personal storytelling, Atlantis Stories offers a unique glimpse into life aboard the historic Atlantis and the sailors who served aboard her.
